Portrait of Purnima Sampat

About the Artist

Purnima Sampat

Purnima Sampat is a Mumbai-based artist and educator whose practice spans painting, drawing and mixed media.

Her work explores memory, presence and the traces left by experience. Working through layered surfaces, botanical impressions, drawing and material interventions, she creates works that move between recognition and abstraction, presence and absence.

Her engagement with art has developed over several decades through an ongoing practice of looking, making and experimentation. Her studio practice is rooted in observation and in allowing an image to emerge through the accumulation, erasure and transformation of marks and materials.

Alongside her artistic practice, Purnima has spent over four decades working in art education. She is the founder of The Art Studio Mumbai, an independent art education studio through which she has worked with generations of students, artists and young people.

Her experience as an educator and her studio practice remain closely connected through a shared belief in sustained observation, experimentation and the development of an individual visual language.

Purnima's work has been exhibited in group and independent exhibitions and is held in private and institutional collections. She lives and works in Mumbai, India.
